Joel Law, 39, Killed in Sumter Crash on CR 475 and SR 44: 16-Year-Old Bryleigh Law remains hospitalized

Joel Law was driving a Chevy pickup truck eastbound on SR 44 approaching the intersection when the driver of a westbound Nissan Altima swerved to avoid colliding with a vehicle that ran the stop sign at the intersection with CR-475 and ended up colliding with Law’s pickup truck.

Sumter County, FL – The man who was killed in a crash at a Sumter County intersection on Friday, Jan. 17 has been identified as 39-year-old Joel Harrison Law of Oxford. Two other people were injured, including Joel’s 16-year-old daughter identified as Bryleigh Law.

FHP said Joel Law was driving a Chevy pickup truck eastbound on SR 44 approaching the intersection when the driver of a westbound Nissan Altima swerved to avoid colliding with a vehicle that ran the stop sign at the intersection with CR-475 and ended up colliding with Law’s pickup truck.

Both the Nissan and the pickup truck caught fire following the 5:30 p.m. collision.

Law died in the accident. His 16-year-old daughter, later identified as Bryleigh Law, was seriously injured in the incident. Authorities say the girl remains hospitalized.

The driver of the Nissan also sustained serious injuries.

Sumter County, FL – A man was killed and two other people were seriously injured, one being a 16-year-old girl, after two vehicles collided Friday night in Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said the fatal collision occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on January 17 at the intersection of County Road 475 and State Road 44.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, an unidentified vehicle was heading southbound on C.R. 474, approaching a stop sign for the intersection of State Road 44.

At the same time, a Nissan Altima was heading westbound on State Road 44, approaching the intersection of C.R. 475, while a Chevy pickup truck was eastbound on SR 44, also approaching the intersection.

Authorities say the unidentified vehicle entered the intersection against a stop sign. To avoid colliding with the car, a 32-year-old man operating the Nissan swerved to the left and traveled into the eastbound lanes, where he crashed the Chevy.

Both vehicles caught fire following the collision.

According to FHP, the 39-year-old male Chevy driver succumbed to the injuries suffered in the collision. His passenger, a 16-year-old girl, suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the Nissan also sustained serious injuries in the incident.

The identity of the deceased driver was not immediately released.

The authorities are searching for anyone with information regarding the vehicle that failed to yield to the right of way causing the deadly collision.
