11-Year-Old Boy Killed in Bicycle Accident near Midfield Road and Hancock Drive in Marana

Authorities said an 11 year old boy was killed after being struck by an SUV while riding a bicycle Thursday morning near Midfield Road and Hancock Drive in Marana.

Marana, AZ.- An 11 year old boy was killed following a bicycle accident involving an SUV Thursday morning in the Gladden Farms area of Marana.

The accident occurred around 7:53 a.m. on August 20 near North Midfield Road and West Hancock Drive.

Authorities said the child was wearing a helmet and riding his bicycle east from West Hancock Drive when he entered an unmarked crosswalk on North Midfield Road.

At the same time, a 2008 Ford Expedition was traveling north on North Midfield Road. The SUV struck the boy in the northbound lane.

Bystanders began lifesaving efforts following the collision before emergency crews arrived at the scene.

The child suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities said he was later pronounced dead.

The boy was a sixth grade student at Tangerine Farms K-8.

The driver of the Ford Expedition remained at the scene following the accident.

Authorities said impairment was not believed to have contributed to the collision.

The roadway reopened after investigators examined the accident scene.

No citations or arrests have been reported.

The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.
