Warm Up Right

While it’s tempting to jump right in, you shouldn’t immediately overwork your body with strenuous activity. It’s true that we all want the immediate satisfaction of looking better and feeling stronger. However, long-lasting results take time, and trying to take shortcuts won’t work.

So, warm up properly before you work out. Do some stretches. If you’re lifting weights, start out light and work your way up. If you haven’t worked out in a while, avoid straining yourself. This doesn’t just apply to weights. It doesn’t matter if you’re running, swimming, lifting weights, or doing another kind of workout. Never start with too much, too soon. Start out slowly and gradually progress to a more intense workout.

Maintain Good Form

Form is one factor of gym safety that many people forget. Whenever you exercise, it’s important to keep excellent form. Your muscles are designed to move in only a few ways, so not knowing proper form could cost you and cause serious injury.

No matter the exercise you’re doing, make sure you know exactly how to do it! If you are unsure, ask another gym member or a staff member. There is bound to be someone around who can help you with your form while you exercise. Bringing a friend with you can also help keep your form how it should be, and reinforce your goals.

Have a Spotter

If you do plan on lifting weights or using some of the machines at the gym, you should have a spotter with you. Besides the obvious, spotters are helpful for various reasons. One reason is that they are a source of encouragement, strengthening your resolve to finish your workout. However, perhaps the more important reason is that they can keep an eye on your form.

Remember how important form is? Well, if you couldn’t trust yourself to check your form as you work out, you can always trust spotters who know the ropes. They can observe your form and make sure you’re exercising correctly. Spotters keep you safe in other ways, too. For example, if you cannot lift that heavy weight off your chest while bench pressing, your spotter should be able to swoop in and save you.

Stay Hydrated

One of the most important components of gym safety is hydration. Too often, people get involved in their intense workouts only to find that they feel awful afterwards. Is it because their workouts were too strenuous? Perhaps. But it’s probably also because they weren’t drinking enough fluids.

As you work out, you sweat – a lot. That liquid doesn’t simply replace itself. Therefore, you should always drink water before, during, and even after your workout. If your workout is particularly vigorous, consider drinking liquids that also replenish electrolytes.

Dress Appropriately

Many people don’t often think that the way you dress as a part of gym safety. However, the way you dress is quite important to your health. You should dress in accordance with the workout you’ll be doing. Going outside in the cold, dark, arid night? Consider dressing in warmer clothing with bright colors. Working out inside? Maybe you should wear lighter clothing. How intense will your workout be? How long will you exercise? Do you have the proper shoes? Are your clothes breathable yet moisture repellant? These are all things to consider before you start your workout.
