Dialysis Patient Heart Attacks
Dialysate solutions such as GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are used to remove toxins and treat renal kidney failure during dialysis. However, improper use or mixing of these prescribed acetate solutions with bicarbonates during hemodialysis may lead to heart attacks, strokes or other severe health conditions.
The FDA stated they received an anonymous complaint indicating that dosing errors occurred during hemodialysis using GranuFlo and NaturaLyte due to their higher levels of acetate in comparison to other similar dialysis products. These higher levels of acetate can result in dangerously elevated serum bicarbonate levels in dialysis patients.
The drug manufacturer Fresenius is alleged to have hidden the potential risks associated with inappropriate dosage levels of these dialysis products from some physicians and medical directors outside their own network.
As a result, some dialysis patients may have suffered from the following potential side effects and symptoms after treatment:
- Heart attacks
- Cardiopulmonary complications
- Also, low blood potassium levels
- Low blood pressure
- Excess carbon dioxide levels in blood
- Low blood oxygen levels
