Inebriated driver hits 5 cars, including a self-driving vehicle
Mesa, AZ (June 17,2018)- According to authorities, an inebriated driver collided with five other cars, including a self-driving vehicle in Mesa on Saturday night.
Mesa authorities responded to Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue around 10 p.m. after receiving calls about a car crash. According to officials, several witnesses stated that a car was travelling south on Country Club Drive after failing to stop at a red light. The first car collided with the self-driving vehicle as it was turning left onto Country Club Drive from Southern Avenue.
A police spokesperson stated that the car then proceeded southbound on Country Club Drive and struck three other cars before finally stopping. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, according authorities. A child received treatment for minor injuries from the incident.
The driver of the vehicle responsible was believed to have been impaired and arrested.
The self-driving vehicle was not in autonomous mode at the time of the crash. The self-driving car was one of the Waymo company, formerly of Google’s attempt at self-driving cars.
