(August 2018) Recently, following a deadly crash, Uber decided to pull their self-driving program out of Arizona. However, there’s a new ride in town. The Google spinoff, Waymo, has put self-driving technology back onto the Phoenix streets. Waymo has partnered with the city’s transit system.
Valley Metro, the agency that oversees the light rail and buses in metro Phoenix, and Waymo had already been discussions about a partnership several months prior to the crash in March that killed a local pedestrian.
Waymo retains a stellar reputation in Arizona, with a minor exception including a Waymo car. Valley Metro CEO Scott Smith believes that a higher standard needs to apply to self-driving technology. The Uber incident, in Smith’s opinion, showed that that the standards needed raising for this tech.
In a blog post Tuesday, July 31st, Waymo announced that a pilot program would allow riders to call an autonomous car to the nearest Valley Metro stop, through the Waymo app.
The technology will first undergo testing by employees of the company and currently remains in research mode. The self-driving initiative comes in the wake of more scrutiny on driverless technology.
