New Mexico (August 31, 2018) A tractor-trailer collided head-on with a packed Greyhound bus in northwestern New Mexico, killing at least seven passengers, local police said. Passengers were spotted tying to climb out of the windows of the New Mexico bus. Bystanders also hustled through the debris, carrying ladders in hopes of helping others.
New Mexico State Police Officer Ray Wilson stated on Thursday, “We do expect that number to rise.”
Records indicate that 49 people were aboard the New Mexico bus and most of them were taken to local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. According to local authorities, the driver of the bus sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
According to Officer Wilson, the crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, when an eastbound tractor-trailer on I-40 had a tire blow, causing the driver to lose control of their vehicle, crossing into the median and striking the Los Angeles-bound New Mexico bus.
Officials also stated that it was not the first deadly crash involving a passenger bus in the state. Another crash occurred in July, when a passenger bus driver tried to avoid a crash along the I-25, but lost control and rolled crossing the highway; the bus was then hit by a semi-truck.
