Celebrate National Safety Month This June!

National Safety Month 2020

The National Safety Council (NSC) observes National Safety Month every June. Each year, the organization aims to educate workplaces and the general public on specific safety issues. For National Safety Month 2020, the NSC is focused on mental health, ergonomics, creating a safety culture, and safe driving habits.

In this post, the Las Vegas personal injury lawyers at Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys explore these safety issues as they pertain to our local community and offer practical tips to help everyone stay safe this June and beyond.

Mental Health

Mental health is a crucial safety issue that is often overlooked in comparison to physical health. It’s one thing to break your arm at work and receive workers’ compensation, and yet another issue entirely when you’re suffering from depression, anxiety, fatigue, or substance abuse disorders as a result of a demanding job.

The NSC recommends that employers provide employees with shorter, more frequent breaks throughout the workday, predictable days off, and fatigue reporting systems to prevent work fatigue.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics has taken on a whole new meaning as many employees continue to work from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NSC reminds those working at a computer to work in a neutral posture, ensuring the lower back is supported. The council also recommends sitting at least 25 inches away from your computer monitor and keeping your feet flat on the floor or a footrest.

Working from home during National Safety Month 2020 also means making sure your work environment is free of potential hazards. Does your home have working smoke detectors and fire extinguishers? Is there any clutter on your floor that could cause a slip and fall accident?

Building a Safety Culture

Building a safety culture in the workplace is incredibly important, even if you don’t think of your job as hazardous. The coronavirus pandemic has given many business owners pause when it comes to crisis response planning. Business owners and leaders can use this unprecedented time as an opportunity to prepare more efficiently for unforeseen circumstances in the future.

The NSC suggests that safety training for all employees, establishing a safety committee, and open lines of communication are the best ways to reduce on-the-job injuries.

Driving

Las Vegas is notorious for its bad drivers. In fact, a recent study found that Nevada ranks among the top ten states in the country for careless driving.

Car accidents are an unfortunately common sight on Las Vegas streets and highways. To help prevent traffic accidents, consider brushing up on your defensive driving skills. Never drink and drive, and don’t engage in distracted driving.
