Around noon today, one paramedic was killed, and another was critically injured when a semi-truck collided with the cab of a Salt River Pima-Maricopa Fire Department ambulance that was traveling along State Route 87 in Mesa between McDowell and Gilbert Roads. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), there was no patient on board the ambulance during the time of the accident.
Troopers also confirmed that the semi-truck driver was injured and transported to a local hospital. The cause of the Mesa semi-truck accident involving an ambulance is still under investigation.
Traffic closures were set up along State Route 87 to divert northbound lanes at McDowell Road and southbound lanes at Gilbert Road.
