How Accident Prone Are the Men in Your Life?

Chicago Men's health month
Find out more about the Chicago Men’s health month.

June is National Men’s Health Month, making it the perfect time to help the men in your life stay as healthy and accident-free as possible. And in Chicago Men’s health month is important.

If men seem more accident prone than women, it’s not just your imagination – statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) back this up. From traumatic brain injuries to fireworks accidents, men suffer more accident-related injuries on average than women do.

Up until age 44, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for males in every age group, according to the CDC.

Men’s Health Month helps highlight the dangers of these common sources of serious injuries and even fatalities among men:

  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Poisoning
  • Falls
  • Water-related accidents / drowning

The following tips can help make the men in your life less accident prone during Chicago Men’s health month and throughout the year:

Get Enough Sleep

Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep a night. Many men snore, which can be a sign of sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder that can cause daytime drowsiness and other issues. If your partner snores, Men’s Health Month is the ideal time to encourage him to talk to his doctor.

A lack of sleep can increase the likelihood that he’ll be involved in a motor vehicle or machinery-related accident.

Drive Safely

Statically, officers pull men over for driving under the influence more often than women. In Illinois, 80% of drivers arrested for DUI in a recent year were men, with rates highest among men age 21-24.

Encourage the men in your life to stay calm so they don’t fall victim to road rage. Men’s Health Month is also the perfect time to remind them to wear their seat belt or helmet.

Limit Alcohol Consumption

In addition to crashes, alcohol increases the risk of poor decision-making that can cause other types of accidents.

If the men in your life drink alcohol, encourage moderation and help arrange for other transportation if they’re been drinking.

Staying safe during Men’s Health Month also depends on the actions of others. If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident due to someone else’s negligence, contact Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys for a free consultation.
