Are you in the market to buy a motorcycle for your daily commute in an Arizona city? Then, one of the first questions you might have is whether or not you need to get a motorcycle permit before you ride. Another question might be whether or not there are any Arizona motorcycle permit restrictions. To help answer these questions, our Arizona motorcycle accident lawyers put together the following helpful information.
Arizona Motorcycle Permit Restrictions to Know
The Arizona Department of Transportation requires applicants to be at least 16 years of age to apply for a motorcycle license or endorsement. If an applicant is under 18, they will need to have held an Arizona instruction permit for at least 6 months with a minimum of 30 hours driving experience.
It’s important to note that the permit must also be valid at time of application for a motorcycle license. Further, your instructions permit will be valid for 7 months, and can be renewed once in 24 months.
Additionally, you need to take note of these other Arizona motorcycle permit restrictions. More specifically, you will not be permitted to:
- Carry passengers on freeways or interstate highways
- Operate a motorcycle on freeways or interstate highways
- Operate a motorcycle when there is not enough light to clearly see people or vehicles at a distance of 500 feet
- Drive without the visual supervision of a licensed driver

Do You Need a Motorcycle Permit to Get a Class M License?
You do not need a motorcycle permit to get an Arizona Class M motorcycle license if you are over the age of 18 years and have a current Arizona driver license. You will, however, need to pass a motorcycle skills test.
Conversely, if you are under 18, you must have held an Arizona motor vehicle instruction permit for at least six months prior to applying for a motorcycle license.
The good news is that once you’ve taken the required steps to obtain an Arizona motorcycle license, you only need to keep these time limits in mind:
- Your motorcycle license does not expire until age 65
- Drivers age 60 and older will receive a 5-year license
- You will be required to take a new photo and an eye test every 12 years
Arizona Motorcycle License Residency Requirements
Regardless of age, if you are a temporary resident you may apply for a five-year Arizona motorcycle license. Temporary residents include military personnel and their family members, as well as out-of-state students and their families.
