Merrillville COVID-19 School Reopening Safety

Merrillville COVID-19 School Reopening Safety

Merrillville students are set to return to school virtually on August 20, 2020. Originally, the Merrillville Community School Corporation (MCSC) gave parents the option to have their children return to school in person or use remote learning. Due to rising infection numbers, the Merrillville COVID-19 school reopening plan changed.

The MCSC, in conjunction with the Lake County Board of Health (LCBH) and the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), has opted to start the first trimester of the 2020-2021 school year with remote learning and reevaluate the situation towards the end of the trimester.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused an unusual start to the school year, with many challenges parents and students are not prepared for. To help the children in your family return to school safety and successfully, Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys has assembled a Merrillville COVID-19 school reopening safety guide.

Getting ready to go back to school? Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys is providing FREE backpacks and school supplies to Merrillville students as a part of its Drive-Thru Backpack Giveaway on August 15, 2020 on August 15, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Hidden Lake Park (6355 Broadway, Merrillville, IN 46410). Stop by with the students in your family to get a backpack stuffed with essential school supplies.

Staying Safe at Home While Remote Learning

Many of us think of home as the safest place to be, but it can be a dangerous place for children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), unintentional falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries of people under age 19. Many slip-and-fall injuries occur at home. Since your kids will be spending more time at home as part of the Merrillville COVID-19 school reopening, it’s important to keep your home clean and organized in order to avoid unintentional falls.

Additionally, full-time distance-learning is something that you and your children will have to adapt to. Special care and attention is required in order to make remote learning effective. This includes:

  • Monitoring your children as they’re doing coursework to make sure that they’re focused and avoid online bullying
  • Making sure that your kids only use apps and software approved by the school
  • Using parental controls to ensure that your children do not consume inappropriate content
  • Spending additional time talking to your kids to compensate for the lack of social interaction that comes with distance learning
  • Preparing your children’s meals so that they avoid burn injuries in the kitchen
  • Making sure their computers and Internet devices aren’t plugged into overloaded outlets that can cause electrocution injuries

For additional information, the Indiana Department of Education has put together a “COVID-19 Remote Learning Resource” page.
