Holbrook, AZ (June 28, 2018)- Five people were injured and two killed in a wrong-way crash Saturday afternoon on I-40, just east of Holbrook.
After 3 p.m. authorities received calls informing them of a vehicle travelling the wrong-way, specifically easterly in westbound traffic, on the I-40 near the Hopi Travel Plaza. It was also apparent that the vehicle was traveling at a high velocity.
Around 4 p.m. the car collided directly with a van full of passengers around milepost 297. Upon impact, the vehicle traveling the wrong-way ignited and then was engulfed in flames.
Unfortunately, both drivers died at the scene, according to authorities. The driver of the wrong way vehicle was later identified as Craig E. Allen, 72, of Sun City and the van’s driver was Kayleen M Candelaria, 35, of Apache Junction. 5 of the passengers in the van also received injuries and were taken by emergency responders to a Winslow hospital for medical treatment.
The victims were returning from a church camp in Oklahoma, according to leaders at New Season Christian Fellowship in Apache Junction.
Kayleen M Candelaria was identified by Pastor Heidi Capozzi.
