Douglas, Arizona (April 6, 2018) – A Border Patrol agent suffered serious injuries after being thrown from his ATV and struck by a passing car Saturday afternoon in Douglas. Authorities received a call about an ATV crash on Highway 80 at about 4:30 p.m. on March 24. Upon arriving to the scene at the intersection of Highway 80 and Plantation Road, troopers found the car in the eastbound lane and the agent off to the side of the roadway.

According to investigations, the agent was riding his ATV on South Plantation Road heading towards Highway 80 when he collided with a cattle guard. The resulting crash threw the agent from his ATV and into the roadway. As he was standing up, a car struck and seriously injured the agent. However, authorities believe the vehicle was traveling at the speed limit.
The agent was taken to a Tucson-based hospital by a helicopter.
Traffic officials shut down the east and westbound lanes following the accident. The westbound lanes reopened after approximately 20 minutes while the eastbound lanes were diverted for several hours.
Authorities have not released the name of the agent.
An investigation of the crash is ongoing.
